Tune the timpani to Eb, Bb, & Eb: Emphasize the accented notes by using a slightly higher & faster mallet stroke. The tempo is not real fast. Count carefully, making sure not to rush. Play the ‘Bb’s’ in measures 59 to 62 consistently in a drone like fashion. Strike the timpani head sharply about 3 1/2 inches from the rim, quickly moving back towards the rim for the ‘fp.’ Move gradually back towards the center of the timpani head as you play the crescendo. Be careful not to over balance.
Percussion 1 Bar 58, Beat 1 thru 70, 4 tempo 84
Snare Drum: Control is very important with each of these rolls. Begin each roll about 2 inches from the rim. Move gradually towards the center of the drum head as you play each crescendo. Release each tied roll exactly on beat 1 of the next measure. The whole note rolls in m. 66 & 67 should be released on count 4. The tempo is not very fast. Count carefully, especially the rests, making sure not to rush. Be careful not to over balance.
Percussion 2 Bar 57, Beat 1 thru 74, 4 tempo 85
Suspended Cymbal: Begin each roll about 1/2 the distance between the rim & center of the cymbal. Move gradually towards the rim, increasing mallet speed as you play each crescendo. The tempo is not real fast. Count carefully, making sure to release each roll at the notated time.

Emphasize the accented note by using a faster mallet stroke. The tempo is not real fast. Count carefully, making sure not to drag. The rhythm & notes are very repetitive. Stay focus. Be sure to play ‘Db’s & B naturals’ in measure 43.
