Marching Band Camp 2016 information

We are just a couple of weeks away from the start of our journey together. We, the staff, are so excited to get to work with your kids this year.

Below you will find the following:

  • an updated camp schedule
  • an updated band schedule (summer and fall)
  • the fee structure and worksheet (you will need to print this off and send it with your son/daughter to band camp on Tuesday, July 26th, with a check made payable to LSWHS or cash)

Please notice that we changed the time of the performance/meeting to 4:30pm on Friday, July 29th. We will have much to do and show you that afternoon. Hope you can get off work a little early and join us.

All new members (regardless of grade level) should report to Rookie Camp on Friday, July 22nd at 8am in the band room at LSWHS. We will be finished 12pm.

All other members of the band should report to Camp on Monday, July 25th, at 8am in the PAC at LSWHS. We will be finished at 4pm each day that week.

Drumline Camp 2016

If you have a son/daughter in the drumline at LSWHS, our Drumline Camp is coming in just 9 days!
Just for some points of clarification, there are two sub-sections within the drumline, the "battery" (snare, tenors, bass) and the "frontline" (mallets, piano, auxiliary percussion).

Battery will start camp on Sunday, July 17th at LSHS at noon. You will need to check in by 11:45am, so maybe you can go to church early that day 🙂
Below, you will see a schedule of events for this 2-day camp put on by the Blue Devils (a drum and bugle corps) In addition, there are two forms toward the end of the packet that you need to have filled out and brought to registration before the first session begins. You do NOT need to fill out the registration form, as I have already done so for you.
Please review the schedule so you are aware of time commitments.
This camp will conclude Monday night with a trip to see the DCI competition in Warrensburg. Transportation will be provided by the school district (stay tuned for more information about this)
The battery will then continue it’s camp at LSWHS on Tuesday morning from 8am to 3pm and continue through Friday. There will be a short lunch break, but you are to bring your lunch. NO STUDENTS are permitted to leave campus for lunch.

The attachment below is ONLY for battery members.

Frontline will start camp on Monday, July 18th at LSWHS from 8am to 3pm and continue through Friday. There will be a short lunch break, but you are to bring your lunch. NO STUDENTS are permitted to leave campus for lunch.
In addition, students will be attending the DCI competition in Warrensburg on Monday evening. Transportation will be provided by the school district (stay tuned for more information about this)

Fees for this camp will be collected during band camp the following week, so no need to bring money.

Odessa Marching Festival

(See attached file: Odessa Marching Invitational.pdf)

Marching Band Parents,

We hope to see you at the Odessa Marching Festival on Saturday, October 18th. The school’s address is 713 S. 3rd Street, Odessa, MO 64076.

We have attached a map of the campus. Spectator parking is in the lot on the north side of the school near 3rd Street and Phillips Street. There will not be room to park with the band. We will not know the exact location for the band’s campsite until we arrive. The campsite will be in the “bus” parking lots west of 5th Street and College Street.

Please e-mail Mary Grigsby (marygrigsby) with a headcount if you plan to eat dinner with the band (do not include your LSW band student in the count). We are having potato soup and chili. The cost is $7 per adult and $5 for middle school age kids and younger. If you have special dietary needs, please contact Mary. Food may be available for “Walk-ins” on Saturday after the band and those that e-mailed Mary have been served.

There is an admission charge to watch the performance from the stands. The charge will be $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for seniors and students (age 6 through 18). Children 5 years old and under are free.

Please take pictures. We need pictures to share during the end of the season banquet. Thank you again for not parking in the driveway near the band doors during loading and unloading. As always, we can use lots of help loading and unloading. We will be loading the majority of the equipment on Friday immediately after school at noon.

Thank you,
Scott McMilian

Titan Pride Update addendum and edits

Hi there! UNIFORMS ARE HERE! (Well, they will be Friday morning, supposedly) Ha!

We NEED NEED NEED volunteers this Friday, October 10 from 2:00pm until gametime getting all of the kids fitted in their new uniform. This is QUITE the task, so please don’t assume someone else will do this. We REALLY need many volunteers to make this happen. There are SEVERAL jobs needing to be filled for that day. If you are, at all, available, please go to CHARMS and sign up to volunteer.

Here is the uniform fitting plans for Friday:

All Juniors and Seniors

Uniform fitting time is after school beginning at 2:30pm. This means you will need to have the following with you when you come to school:

  • black socks
  • marching shoes
  • BLUE uniform shirt
  • very light/tight shorts or leggings (baggy shorts, even baggy althletic shorts will NOT work with this new uniform)
  • all ladies will need to have their hair in a bun for the game

All Freshmen and Sophomores

Uniform fitting time is 4pm to 5:30pm. It is crucial we make this happen, so I will be buying pizza for dinner for all freshmen and sophomore band members so they have dinner before the game.

I fully understand this timing will be difficult for some, please let me know how I can assist in making carpool arrangements or coming and picking students up if need be myself.

You will need to show up ready for the game at 4pm with the following:

  • black socks
  • marching shoes
  • BLUE uniform shirt
  • very light/tight shorts or leggings (baggy shorts, even baggy althletic shorts will NOT work with this new uniform)
  • all ladies will need to have their hair in a bun for the game

BIG mistake on the Bronco Invitational itinerary. Here is the new one:

(See attached file: Bronco Invitational.doc)

The change is that we WILL be taking a bus back to LSWHS after the event.

Also note that if your son/daughter will be taking alternate transportation to/from the event, I MUST have written notification by Friday (if this, in any way, involves the student transporting himself/herself, it must have administrative approval.)

Did I mention we need volunteers on Friday starting at 2pm?

See you all later this week!

Titan Pride Update, Turkey and State Football edition!

Well, the Titans did it again. 42-14 was the final tonight over the Kearney Bulldogs. We are headed to STATE! Our last performance of the season will be in the Edward Jones Dome on Saturday, November 30th at 5:30pm.

This brings with it plenty of challenges, given we only have two days of school remaining before break. Please read the following carefully, so our trip logistics can run smoothly.

  • IF, for any reason, your son/daughter will be traveling one direction without the band (meaning they will not be on the bus), we NEED written verification of this.
  • IF they are riding to OR from with someone other than their own parents, they MUST fill out the approved travel release form that I will provide them MONDAY during class. This MUST be signed and returned NO LATER THAN Tuesday, November 26th at NOON!
  • IF they are riding to OR from with a parent, a hand-written note or email will suffice.
  • We will TRY to go outside to rehearse on MONDAY or TUESDAY during school. Please tell your son/daughter to come prepared to go outside in the cold those days.
  • I have a lot of things to iron out before I can give you an itinerary, but we plan to leave mid-morning and return LATE (as in after midnight).

Lastly, I wish you all a blessed Thanksgiving! Have a relaxing time with your families. And don’t forget to put EVERYTHING on your Thursday dinner table between two pieces of bread on Friday! (That is my favorite part)

Football playoff information

Greetings!

The LSW Titan football team had another great win this weekend. LSW will host the next game on Friday, Nov. 22nd, at 7:00pm against Kearney. The band will perform at the game and the call time for students is 6:00pm.

If the Titans win on Friday, the next game will be the state championship game! The game will be at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis on Saturday, Nov. 30th at 5:30pm and the band will perform at halftime. The band typically takes bus transportation to and from the event, leaving early morning and returning late evening. If you plan on going and prefer staying a night or two, I recommend the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark. They have blocked a number of rooms for LSW…let them know you are calling for the $79 rate that is to be given to fans of the Lee’s Summit West football team.

Go Titans!

Latest Titan Pride Update

Greetings!

There is a lot of information to pass on, so please make sure you read this in its entirety.

ALL REMAINING BALANCES FOR BAND FEES ARE DUE TO MR. THURMOND BY TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14TH.

NEW CALENDAR EVENTS!
Wednesday, October 23rd
The band will be playing at the annual Dig for the Cure Volleyball Game, right here at LSW in the Fieldhouse. Students will be receiving a shirt to wear to this event. Families are encouraged to attend. The event raises awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Research, via the Susan B. Komen Foundation. It’s a wonderful event for us to be involved, and I’m excited we’ve been asked again to play. I will have a better idea on time on next week’s update, but wanted to make sure you had this put in your calendars right away to prevent conflicts from arising.

Monday, November 4th
Announcing the date for the Band Banquet. On Monday, November 4th, we will be having our annual end-of-season band banquet at Garozzo’s in Lee’s Summit. More information to follow, but again, I wanted you to get it on your calendars now. This event is for all marching band members and their families.

Tonight
Football game vs RayPec, call time is 5:30pm (5:15 for seniors)

Tomorrow, VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE
Tomorrow is Race for the Future on our campus, where hundreds of people will be running a 5K to benefit the students of the LSR7 School District. Our parking lot here will be slammed.
Your ONLY access to the parking lot is the SOUTH entrance. You will need to drop your student off at the back door early enough for them to get their instrument and get to the soccer field THROUGH a crowd of people.
Here is the itinerary again for reference: Bronco Invitational
The Week at a Glance

Saturday, 10/19
UCM Festival of Champions
Please review the attached itinerary for this festival. It will be a long day.
I am selling tickets to this event for any family members traveling to Warrensburg for our performances. This ticket will gain you access to all events for the entire day. In addition, part of the ticket price will be given back to the band IF you buy the ticket through me prior to Friday, 10/18 at the ballgame. Tickets are $13 per person (children included). You can send money with your child any day next week or take care of it at the football game next Friday.
Remember, we get 20% of the money back for the band program, so please consider purchasing from us instead of at the gate.
