LSWMP January news and notes

Greetings,

Things are starting to pick up in the music program and it’s a very exciting time. On to the news and notes:

Music Festival

– This is quickly coming and there will be an email shortly. There are two parts to the music festival: solo/small ensemble and large ensemble. To give you an idea of how many people go through LSW – last year we had 6,800 performers over 6 days, 207 volunteer spots, we covered 850 hours with 126 unique volunteers!

LSW Music Parents news and notes

Good evening/morning,

I know that it’s been a while since my last email. I’ve taken a week to recover from just over 2 ½ months of 70 hour work weeks with only a couple days off.

There hasn’t been much going on in the world of the music parents, any correspondence that’s been needed has been sent via the teachers. One of our biggest events of the year is coming up the beginning of March and with this comes the opportunity to volunteer and show many throughout the area what LSWHS is all about. Look for information to start coming out in the next couple weeks for volunteer opportunities.

Needs:
Volunteers – Without parents stepping up this organization isn’t able to provide the assistance that our music department greatly needs. We could use help in all areas and I’m adjusting the roles document for the positions as they’ve changed the past couple of years. We do have some current committee needs however:
Music Festival – It would be great to have a few people in leadership roles besides myself that can help facilitate the events, one person running this by themselves is simply too much. I’m going through the notes for this currently and have several positions that will need help.

Taste of Lee’s Summit – This is held in the evening of March 5. If you’re unable to help with the district competition please consider helping with this. Last year I volunteered at the district competition and TOLS, I enjoyed both GREATLY. Taste of Lee’s Summit is an evening of fundraising for the Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation to help students across the LS school district. You’ll be able to sample food from various vendors, make bids on fantastic donations from the community and interact with a diverse group of people. We need at least 10 volunteers for this event and there are positions for standing, sitting and walking around. LSWMP receives $2500 from this partnership that helps pay for various things including awards.
For the Taste of Lee’s Summit we have been asked to get donations from area businesses to be auctioned off at the event. We are in need of some volunteers to take a packet and contact the businesses on each list to get these as soon as possible. If you are interested in helping with this please contact Mary Grigsby at 785-5215.

Upcoming events:
January 21 – Music parent meeting 7pm
January 27-30 – MMEA
February 25 – Symphonic Band and 8th grade band concert
March 4-5 – District solo/small ensemble
March 5 – Taste of Lee’s Summit 4pm-10pm

Ice Cream Social notes

Good evening,

Thank you to everyone that has turned in tickets, volunteered to serve and bring desserts. Again this is on Tuesday starting at 6pm.

Desserts – I’ve put a signup sheet in charms if you’re bringing desserts to give us an idea of how many to expect. You can begin delivering them at 4pm in the Commons area (on Tuesday the 15th). If you can cut your dessert prior to bringing it up that would be great to make it easier to quickly.

Volunteers – We’re still in need of many volunteers. I understand that some of the slots are during the performances, this unfortunately can’t be helped. Please don’t let this stop you from volunteering and step away to watch the performances of your student.

Call times – Teachers should have either sent these out already or will be.

Tickets – If you need more tickets I’d suggest at this point to just pay at the Ice Cream Social, we’ll have registers. Please ask your student to turn in any unused tickets and any ticket payments as well.

Serving food – This will begin at roughly 5pm, as soon as we have enough volunteers in place. Again the more volunteers we have the faster we can serve and keep the lines short.

Thank you,

Brent Grigsby

A fundraising opportunity was presented to the Music Parents that I wanted to pass along.

The schedule for volunteers at Pyro City (in Lone Jack) is:

July 3rd 1:00 – 9:00 pm – we will provide dinner

July 4th 10:00 – 5:00 pm – we will provide lunch

We need each shift:
2 adults to supervise and help with parking if needed

4 greeters/cart person must be 16 years old

6 baggers/stockers must be 16 years old

Volunteers can wear shorts/t-shirt but please not tanks or mid drift shirts. Tennis shoes – not flip flops.
Volunteers can bring a water bottle or other drink that has a lid. There is a water fountain to be used to refill water bottles.

Odessa Marching Festival

(See attached file: Odessa Marching Invitational.pdf)

Marching Band Parents,

We hope to see you at the Odessa Marching Festival on Saturday, October 18th. The school’s address is 713 S. 3rd Street, Odessa, MO 64076.

We have attached a map of the campus. Spectator parking is in the lot on the north side of the school near 3rd Street and Phillips Street. There will not be room to park with the band. We will not know the exact location for the band’s campsite until we arrive. The campsite will be in the “bus” parking lots west of 5th Street and College Street.

Please e-mail Mary Grigsby (marygrigsby) with a headcount if you plan to eat dinner with the band (do not include your LSW band student in the count). We are having potato soup and chili. The cost is $7 per adult and $5 for middle school age kids and younger. If you have special dietary needs, please contact Mary. Food may be available for “Walk-ins” on Saturday after the band and those that e-mailed Mary have been served.

There is an admission charge to watch the performance from the stands. The charge will be $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for seniors and students (age 6 through 18). Children 5 years old and under are free.

Please take pictures. We need pictures to share during the end of the season banquet. Thank you again for not parking in the driveway near the band doors during loading and unloading. As always, we can use lots of help loading and unloading. We will be loading the majority of the equipment on Friday immediately after school at noon.

Thank you,
Scott McMilian

Marching Band Parents: Help Needed

Marching Band Parents,

Thank you to all of the parents that have helped place equipment on the field. We need even more volunteers for Friday and the upcoming games and marching competitions.

We need around 15 volunteers to help move equipment onto the field just before the performance. It is a great way to get closer to the band and away from the noise of the stands. Most of the jobs do not require heavy lifting.

We will also have written directions (some with pictures!) for most of the jobs. Please meet us over at the band bleachers near the start of the game to find a job. We will also need lots of help with uniforms after the game Friday.

The kids will be receiving information this week on their new uniforms and turning in their old ones. They will turn in their old uniforms after the game. All students should plan on staying for a while after the game as they pack up their uniforms.

Thank you to all of the parents that avoid parking in the driveway near the band room after games. It is safer for the kids and it is a lot easier to move equipment back to the band room when the driveway is clear.

Scott McMilian

Assistance Needed with Choir Jackets Tomorrow

On Friday morning, from 7:20 am to 8:30 am, jackets will be distributed to the individuals in the Men’s Choir. Parent volunteer assistance (2-3 helpers) will make this process run much smoother. If you are available to assist, please reply to this email.

Thanks!
Nancy
