Odessa Marching Festival

(See attached file: Odessa Marching Invitational.pdf)

Marching Band Parents,

We hope to see you at the Odessa Marching Festival on Saturday, October 18th. The school’s address is 713 S. 3rd Street, Odessa, MO 64076.

We have attached a map of the campus. Spectator parking is in the lot on the north side of the school near 3rd Street and Phillips Street. There will not be room to park with the band. We will not know the exact location for the band’s campsite until we arrive. The campsite will be in the “bus” parking lots west of 5th Street and College Street.

Please e-mail Mary Grigsby (marygrigsby) with a headcount if you plan to eat dinner with the band (do not include your LSW band student in the count). We are having potato soup and chili. The cost is $7 per adult and $5 for middle school age kids and younger. If you have special dietary needs, please contact Mary. Food may be available for “Walk-ins” on Saturday after the band and those that e-mailed Mary have been served.

There is an admission charge to watch the performance from the stands. The charge will be $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for seniors and students (age 6 through 18). Children 5 years old and under are free.

Please take pictures. We need pictures to share during the end of the season banquet. Thank you again for not parking in the driveway near the band doors during loading and unloading. As always, we can use lots of help loading and unloading. We will be loading the majority of the equipment on Friday immediately after school at noon.

Thank you,
Scott McMilian

Marching Band Parents: Help Needed

Marching Band Parents,

Thank you to all of the parents that have helped place equipment on the field. We need even more volunteers for Friday and the upcoming games and marching competitions.

We need around 15 volunteers to help move equipment onto the field just before the performance. It is a great way to get closer to the band and away from the noise of the stands. Most of the jobs do not require heavy lifting.

We will also have written directions (some with pictures!) for most of the jobs. Please meet us over at the band bleachers near the start of the game to find a job. We will also need lots of help with uniforms after the game Friday.

The kids will be receiving information this week on their new uniforms and turning in their old ones. They will turn in their old uniforms after the game. All students should plan on staying for a while after the game as they pack up their uniforms.

Thank you to all of the parents that avoid parking in the driveway near the band room after games. It is safer for the kids and it is a lot easier to move equipment back to the band room when the driveway is clear.

Assistance Needed with Choir Jackets Tomorrow

On Friday morning, from 7:20 am to 8:30 am, jackets will be distributed to the individuals in the Men’s Choir. Parent volunteer assistance (2-3 helpers) will make this process run much smoother. If you are available to assist, please reply to this email.

Thanks!
Nancy

Music Festival Volunteers Needed

District Solo/Small Ensemble Festival was a great success! Thanks to the wonderful parents that volunteered their time to support the incredibly talented kids in the LSW music department. We had 85 parent volunteers that together volunteered over 400 hours. I know that the staff and kids appreciated our support.

We still need volunteers for the State Large Ensemble Festival. Dates are:

· Wed, Mar. 26th from 2:30pm to 9:30pm

· Thurs, Mar. 27th from 12:30pm to 10:00pm

· Fri, Mar. 28th from 2:30pm to 9:00pm

· Sat, Mar. 29th from 7:30am to 7:30pm

Volunteering during the Large Ensemble portion of contest will give you the opportunity to listen to some fantastic groups. Here is a brief description of the volunteer positions:

· Door Monitor: Ensure doors remain closed during performances and assist with crowd flow between performances

· Director Check In: Collect music and stage setup from directors and answer general questions

· Group Escort: Escorts groups from gymnasium to warm-up room

· Sight Reading: Hand music out to students and collect music after performance

· Stage Manager: Manage students in preparing stage for each performing group

There are also more opportunities for students to volunteer during the Large Ensemble portion of contest. Student sign-up sheets are posted outside the choir room.

Please go to Charms to volunteer for a shift. If you have any problems with Charms, please contact me.

Letħ really show our support for the music program and show up with an army of volunteers. The more volunteers that we have, the more fun we will have!

Christmas in the Park Volunteers

Don’t forget Christmas in the Park is this Friday!

Our organization was selected to help Jackson County with the Christmas in the Park light display at Longview Lake. In turn for providing volunteers to collect donations, the LSW Music Parent group will receive a portion of the monies collected for the general fund…up to $1,000! We could still use a few more volunteers.

The details are:

* Day — Friday, November 29th

* Time — 5:00pm to 11:00pm

* Where — Longview Park

In order to receive our share of the funds we have to have at least 6 adults there at all times. Children 16 and older can also volunteer, but no one under the age of 16 can assist.

We can split the night into shifts; however, any volunteers that come after the park opens will need to wait in the line of cars to get to the park. The Friday after Thanksgiving will be a very busy night so that will make it difficult to volunteer for only the second part of the night. If you would like to volunteer for the just the second part of the evening, please let me know (I think I have Plan B that will work and only involves a short walk thru the woods.)

You can sign up to volunteer in Charms:

Enter school code: lswhsmusic

LSWMP November information and All District

This is a copy of a group email sent by Music Parent President.

Good afternoon,

Many students from the band and orchestra participated this past Saturday in All District auditions. As with Choir the music program at West has been blessed with many who made it.

Band had 10 students make all district, one student achieved it with two instruments, along with two making honorable mention. Orchestra had 29 students make all district. CONGRATULATIONS to all of those students. Next for these students is All State on December 7th.

Fundraising:
The current fundraiser that is going on is due no later than November 18th. If orders aren’t received by then they’ll be turned back to the students. The reason for this is for orders to be received before Christmas they must be placed by November 18th.As always all fundraisers are optional and studen ts aren’t required to participate in them. Student account fundraisers go to the specific student accounts and can be used for fees associated with music and the just announced music trip as well.

Andrea Kaiser is working on more fundraisers that will happen throughout the year, some of these will involve selling and some of them won’t. If you have ideas or suggestions please let her know.

Christmas in the Park: There are still volunteer opportunities for this event on Friday, November 29th. This is a general music account fundraiser. The general account is used for many things that you may or may not know about. For example: all state students receive a folio, plaque in the music hallway and per diem for their trip to the all state; general music equipment repairs, music awards and clinicians just to name a few.

Uniforms: Once the football season is over we’ll need help getting marching band uniforms ready to send to the cleaners. If you’re interested in this please let me know.

Music Trip: On Wednesday, November 6, the students were given a presentation for music trip that is happening March 12-17, 2015 to Washington DC. I’m currently working with the staff on an email I’ll be sending out with more information.

Upcoming Dates:

November 24 – Choir Exchange Concert at Redemptorist Catholic Church
November 29 — Christmas in the Park (Volunteer opportunity)
December 5 — LSWMP meeting
December 7 — All State Band/Orchestra/Jazz auditions
December 8 — Dinner and Divas — Women’s Choir
December 10 — Instrumental Winter Concert (1830)
December 16 — Winter Choral Concert

As always should you have any questions please let me know.

Band Info for the week ahead

Greetings!

Congratulations to the Drumline for taking first place in their division at the Drummit at the Summit competition this weekend. You guys did a great job!

Some notable items for the upcoming week:

Tuxedos: All men in band will need a tuxedo for concert band season. Yvonne Bechtold will be at the school on Monday from 6:30pm to 8:00pm to fit and distribute tuxedos. If your son does not have his tuxedo, please stop by the school during this time to pick it up.

Football: Friday night LSW will host Blue Springs. The call time for all band members is 5:30. I suspect the crowd will be huge for this game. With the movement of the student section to where the music parents previously sat, I’m not sure where we will gather. I would recommend getting there early and cheering loudly for the Titan Pride Band (and the football team too)! As always, we could use some music parents in the band room before and after the game to assist with uniforms.

Marching Festival: I also wanted to forward some information about the upcoming marching band competition season. Information about each festival can be found in the following links. The websites will be updated with the actual performance schedule when it gets closer to the date of the festival.

We believe we have enough drivers signed up to drive the trailers to each of the competitions; however, it’s always nice to have back-ups. If you have a truck and would be willing to drive to a competition, please let me know and I’ll add your name to the volunteer list. We are also looking for a small portable generator to use for some of the competitions that go late into the night. Please let me know if you have one that we can use.

UCM Info for Parents

Hello!

What a day we had at the Bronco Invitational! The Drumline and Colorguard took first place in our division in the indoor competition. The band got their field performance completed just before the event was cancelled due to lightning. Although there were no results posted, the performance was very good and I’m amazed at the progress that was made from the prior week at Park Hill. Good job band! Keep up the good work!! I really love that final movement and your last formation looked great!!
