LSWMP September news and notes

Good evening,

Thank you to all those that attended the music parent meeting, it was great to see so many new faces. I’ll have the agenda, financial summary and meeting minutes on CHARMS inside the folders shortly. The music program is in full swing with many great things going on.

Nancy Shaeffer has already sent out a couple things that we need volunteers for, please help as you can. Parent activity is essential for our students to succeed in the music program. There are over 700 parents in the music program, imagine the difference we can make in the students success if we each volunteered for a few hours.

News and notes:

– Ice Cream Social — This has been talked about but a couple of highlights. Food will be served at 5pm with performances starting at 6pm on Sept 9th. Anyone that is eating is required to pay, either purchasing tickets early or paying at the event. Please let me know if you have any items that you’d like to donate for the live auction.

Order of performances will be Orchestra, Marching Band, entire music program, auction followed by the Choirs.

– We’re in need of parents to step into open vacancies, be part of the committee or begin shadowing departing members of the music parent officers group.

– Marching Band, Choir and Instrumental uniform. We’ve had a few step up to be part of a group effort but could use more help and also someone in the coordinating position. Currently Yvonne Bechtold is helping us even though her student graduated last year and she has no students active in high school. Thank you Yvonne!

– Volunteer Liaison — Nancy will have her daughter graduating this year and we could use someone or multiple people willing to learn what she does for the music program.

– Marching Band — Buttons will be passed out prior to the next home game. If you’re a senior parent then we could use your help; banners will need to be hung and taken down at each home game and we need a volunteer for this.

– Trailer sponsorship and wrap. If you’re interested or know of companies that would be interested in having their name on our trailers that would be great.

– Fundraising — Cookie Dough fundraisers will be coming out on September 15th with the deadline to turn them in on September 29. All orders will be delivered October 20th.

Upcoming dates:

September 5 — Tuxedo fittings (9:00am-1:30pm)

September 8 — Tuxedo fittings (6:30pm-8:30pm)

September 9 — Ice Cream Social

September 12 — Football game

September 13 — Drummit at the Summit (Drumline)

LSWMP Ice Cream Social

Good evening,

This past Thursday and Friday I spent the day at the high school handing out a packet that included five meal tickets, five dessert tickets and a letter explaining the ice cream social. I’m going to attach the letter as well as instructions on how to access CHARMS (it will be one document).

If you haven’t received the tickets from your students please ask them. There will also be more tickets available from each of the music teachers. It’s important that money/checks or unused tickets are turned back in so that we can plan accordingly for food.

Volunteers are needed for this event as we serve roughly 1300 meals and desserts at this event. We need any help that you can give. Our volunteer coordinator will be sending information on how to signup. She’ll likely wait until after this next weekend, CHARMS is doing a server upgrade shortly.

If you’d like to donate or know of a business that would like to donate an item(s) for the live auction please let me know. We currently have one parent that will be donating three snare cajons, which will be demonstrated at the ice cream social.

Food will start being served at 5pm with performances starting at 6pm. Performance schedule to be announced shortly.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Go Titans!!

Music Festival Volunteers Needed

District Solo/Small Ensemble Festival was a great success! Thanks to the wonderful parents that volunteered their time to support the incredibly talented kids in the LSW music department. We had 85 parent volunteers that together volunteered over 400 hours. I know that the staff and kids appreciated our support.

We still need volunteers for the State Large Ensemble Festival. Dates are:

· Wed, Mar. 26th from 2:30pm to 9:30pm

· Thurs, Mar. 27th from 12:30pm to 10:00pm

· Fri, Mar. 28th from 2:30pm to 9:00pm

· Sat, Mar. 29th from 7:30am to 7:30pm

Volunteering during the Large Ensemble portion of contest will give you the opportunity to listen to some fantastic groups. Here is a brief description of the volunteer positions:

· Door Monitor: Ensure doors remain closed during performances and assist with crowd flow between performances

· Director Check In: Collect music and stage setup from directors and answer general questions

· Group Escort: Escorts groups from gymnasium to warm-up room

· Sight Reading: Hand music out to students and collect music after performance

· Stage Manager: Manage students in preparing stage for each performing group

There are also more opportunities for students to volunteer during the Large Ensemble portion of contest. Student sign-up sheets are posted outside the choir room.

Please go to Charms to volunteer for a shift. If you have any problems with Charms, please contact me.

Letħ really show our support for the music program and show up with an army of volunteers. The more volunteers that we have, the more fun we will have!

Washington DC trip 2015

I hope that everyone had a great Christmas and New Years! I’m personally refreshed and ready to start a new year.

As I’m sure you’ve heard from your students that the music department is going on a trip to Washington DC on March 12-17, 2015.

Here’s some trip background to those new to the music program. Every other year the music department goes on a big trip outside the state of Missouri, so far all of them have been in the United States, to perform in venues that are a once in a life time opportunity. Trips have been made to Chicago, Los Angeles and last year was to New York City. Each student has two opportunities during their high school career to go on an exciting music trip.

Who’s eligible?
– Students must be enrolled during the 2014-15 school year in one of the following: orchestra, band or concert choir.
– Chaperones. We’ll need many parents to go on the trip.

I’m attaching the PowerPoint presentation that was shown to the students and at a music parents meeting. This gives you a snapshot of what the teachers have worked hard to put together and while not everything is set in stone at this point it also gives you an indication of how exciting a trip like this is. The students will be performing at one venue, at least, in addition to a clinician from top teachers in the Washington DC area, they’ll also be going on a tour around DC via subway and there are many places to explore (free!). A possible White House tour is also being investigated.

Please refer to the PowerPoint presentation (DC Trip Presentation) or the Individual Registration Form — Lee’s Summit found at http://titanmusic.org/2013/12/04/washington-d-c-trip-information/ for the payment schedule. The refund policy is on the Individual Registration Form — Lee’s Summit found at the titanmusic.org website. Payments can be submitted two different ways, either by mailing in the payment or paying online — both instructions are on titanmusic.org and on CHARMS in the Washington DC folder. If you pay online you don’t need to mail the Registration Form.

Student account money can be used towards the trip cost. Please verify through CHARMS that your student has money in their account prior to submitting the Request to use Student Account Funds that can be found in CHARMS or from the music teacher. We’re also working on an online submission form that can be used. If for some reason you cancel going on the trip the money used from the student account for trip payment will be returned to the student accounts.

The music teachers have been working very hard to make this trip an opportunity for each of the students to perform at a place they might not otherwise get to perform and have a once in lifetime experience.

No money should be turned into the music teachers or the music parents, all payments go directly to Music Celebrations. Student account usage requests will go through the music parents.

If you have any questions please let me or the music teachers know. There will be more information shared at each music parent meeting as well.

Taste of Lee's Summit and January notes

Good afternoon,

Taste of Lee’s Summit:

We could use a few parents and student combinations to volunteer to help collect donations/sponsorships for the Taste of Lee’s Summit. We have packets that will guide you through doing this and it can be done very quickly. I’m getting one myself.

Why is the Taste of Lee’s Summit important? This program is sponsored by the Lee’s Summit Education Foundation. The Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation promotes excellence in education by awarding gifts, grants and scholarships to educational areas within the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District that are effective, essential and in need of additional funding. We do that by generating and guiding philanthropic resources through personal and corporate contributions, planned giving, and events.

The music parents organization receives funds from volunteering at TOLS. Funds that we receive help support the music program at LSW through scholarships, professional clinicians, travel expenses and awards to name a few.

In addition to this volunteers are needed to support the TOLS event on March 1. We’ll need 15 adult volunteers that are able to work on March 1st from about 5pm-9pm. I’ve heard that this is a fantastic evening, my wife and I’ll be there and we hope that you’ll join us.

Notes:

January 9 — LSWMP meeting in the band room.

I’d like to congratulate the following students on making All State:

All State Band:
Shayla Brown — Piccolo
Courtney Bingham — English Horn
Allyssa DeJarnette — Clarinet
Isaiah Carter — Jazz — Vibraphone

All State Orchestra:
Quinn Mosier — Bass
Kathryn Hilger — Viola

All State Choir (previously announced):
Danielle Adair — Alto
Courtney Bingham — Soprano
Ashlee Briggs — Soprano
Amanda Brobst — Soprano
Seth Harper — Bass
Preston Hereford — Tenor

These students will be performing at the MMEA conference in Tan-Tar-A resort on January 22-25.

What a talented and great group of students we have in our music program!

Have a blessed day,

Brent Grigsby
LSWMP President

Taste of Lee's Summit Volunteers Needed

The 15th Annual Taste of Lee’s Summit will be Saturday, March 1, 2014 at the Pavilion in John Knox Village. This event is hosted by the Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation which promotes excellence in education by awarding gifts, grants and scholarships to educational areas within the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District. Our group can earn $1,300 for participating in the event.

Christina Calderon is organizing LSW Music Parent’s participation. She needs 5 volunteers to help solicit donations from area businesses for the Taste of Lee’s Summit. She has packets with all of the information, list of businesses grouped by area, and information sheets. Very easy and kind of fun! If you are able to assist Christina in gathering these donations within the next 10 days, please contact her.
